Beyond Carbon Neutral | Mohawk Group

At Mohawk Group, we believe in better. And better for our world means being part of the climate change solution through decarbonization of our products. So, we’re taking all our flooring beyond carbon neutral, to build a regenerative, climate-positive future to create a better tomorrow for people and the planet..

Mohawk Group has a history of leading the flooring industry in sustainable products, becoming the first flooring manufacturer to receive a Living Product Challenge Petal Certification for the Lichen Collection in 2017. Since then, Mohawk Group has expanded its Living Product portfolio to include the entire line of carpet tile products manufactured in Glasgow, VA, USA. These products are all net-positive in both carbon and water – what is referred to as handprinting or giving back more than is used to make the product.

In November of 2021 Mohawk Group joined over 200 other signatories of the Climate Pledge. By signing the pledge, Mohawk Group agrees to incorporate several climate-sensitive strategies, including a commitment to measure and report greenhouse gas emissions regularly, implement decarbonization strategies in line with the Paris Agreement, and neutralize remaining emissions with permanent and socially beneficial offsets to achieve net-zero annual carbon emissions by 2040, 10 years ahead of the Paris agreement..

As of January 2022, ALL Mohawk Group floor covering products including our carpet tile, broadloom, woven, LVT, and other resilient surfaces are going Beyond Carbon Neutral, meaning an additional 5% carbon offset beyond neutral, for a net-positive impact on the environment.

What is The Climate Pledge?

The Climate Pledge is a commitment to net zero carbon by 2040 that forms a cross-sector community of companies and organizations, working together to crack the climate crisis and solve the challenges of decarbonizing our economy. The Climate Pledge was co-founded by Amazon and Global Optimism in 2019..

What does it mean to join The Climate Pledge?

The Climate Pledge calls on signatories to be net zero carbon across their businesses by 2040. Companies and organizations that sign the Pledge commit to three areas of action:

  • Measure and report greenhouse gas emissions on a regular basis
  • Implement decarbonization strategies in line with the Paris Agreement through real business changes and innovations, including efficiency improvements, renewable energy, materials reductions, and other carbon emission elimination strategies.
  • Neutralize any remaining emissions with additional, quantifiable, real, permanent, and socially-beneficial offsets to achieve net zero annual carbon emissions by 2040.

At Mohawk Group, innovation has always defined our business, from industry-changing products to processes we continue to refine. Innovation is also the driving force behind our Environmental, Social and Governance strategy, which is focused on creating a better tomorrow for people and the planet. We are excited to share our sustainability progress with you and even more excited to spotlight our recent initiatives that will foster greater results.

As the first step in the product life cycle, sustainable product design sets the stage for reducing our flooring’s environmental impact throughout all stages of the cycle. Through dematerialization, we reduce the material required in manufacturing. In addition to reducing the amount of virgin material used in manufacturing, we utilize circular design to maximize recycled content. Manufacturing processes inherently produce waste, but we work to give a second life through reuse and recycle. Since 2010, Mohawk has formalized and standardized a reduce/reuse/recycle approach to our manufacturing waste. We have also implemented major manufacturing changes to minimize our carbon footprint by efficient use of water and energy. We are continuously working to optimize circularity within our products with the goal of reducing our overall environmental impact.

Case Study #1: Glasgow, VA Our Living Site.

One of our primary commercial manufacturing facilities, Glasgow was a great opportunity for a change to a seasonal heating system. Located in the Appalachian foothills, Glasgow typically requires some supplemental heating in the production spaces for 6-8 months of the year. The historical system utilized steam heating with steam supplied by a very old inefficient system. In 2020, a modern combination infrared and direct fired system was installed along with a small high-efficiency package boiler for the small remaining steam need. Allowing the old steam system to be retired saving almost 180,000 MMBTU of gas while also saving an estimated 20,000,000 gallons of water usage each year.

Capital Projects Savings:

  • 20,000,000 gal. Water
  • 180,000 MMBTU
  • 9,921 metric tons CO2e

The carbon reduction from this single project is equivalent to the annual CO2 emissions from the energy use of 1,195 homes in the United States.
Through capital initiatives such as the boiler case above, Mohawk Group has successfully reduced the overall carbon emissions of this facility by 48% since 2018.
