From Coast to Career: Abby Ebersold's Journey from Student Design to Durkan Mohawk Group

The Road Trip That Sparked Inspiration

During my time working at a fishing and bear-viewing lodge in Sterling, Alaska, I fell in love with the raw beauty of the Pacific Coast. In 2021, I set forth on an epic road trip from Alaska to Georgia, beginning my journey through the captivating landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. The Pacific Coast became my design muse, its ever-changing colors and dramatic rock formations leaving an indelible mark. This raw beauty became the foundation for my DSCVR design submission and a way to commemorate my experiences and challenge myself to create a tangible product so my travels can carry on in a different form.

Creative Flow: From Mood Board to Masterpiece

Every designer has their own rhythm. Mine starts with research, drawing inspiration from personal experiences like that road trip. Then comes the mood board, a visual symphony of colors, textures, and key elements. Finally, with a good playlist and a steaming cup of coffee, I dive into the design process.

Designing for the Future of Hospitality

The DSCVR competition challenged us to envision the future of hospitality design. My submission saw my coastal inspiration translated into a functional, yet evocative, flooring concept. It was about creating a space that felt connected to nature, a sentiment I believe will continue to resonate in future hospitality experiences.

Challenges and Triumphs

Scaling a design for large-scale use was the biggest hurdle. But through research, peer feedback, and family support, I found a way to bridge the gap between artistic vision and practical functionality. Winning the competition not only validated my design dreams but also opened doors to a career in product design, specifically with flooring – something I never expected!

Innovation at Durkan Mohawk Group

Now, as a designer at Durkan Mohawk Group, I strive to create beautiful, functional flooring that enhances spaces and endures the test of time. It's about finding the sweet spot between innovation and functionality, always keeping the needs of the customer and the brand identity in mind.

So, the next time you step on a Durkan or Mohawk floor, remember – it might just be a piece of someone's incredible journey, waiting to be discovered.
