Our journey into fractals started about a decade ago, amidst the rising tide of biophilic design. We were already deep in research, studying pioneers like E.O. Wilson and Stephen Kellert, who articulated why humans have an innate connection to nature. We were actively exploring ways to incorporate the 14 patterns of biophilic design into our carpet tile systems, understanding that bringing nature indoors wasn't just about aesthetics—it was about supporting human health and well-being.

 

In 2016, we launched Lichen, our first Living Product—an authentic, meticulously researched example of copying nature. The collection was beautiful, sustainable, and commercially successful. But Lichen represented traditional biomimicry: replicating what nature looks like from the outside.

The true transformation came the very next year, in 2017. We were collaborating with Martin Lesjak and Dr. Anastasija Lesjak from 13&9 Design, an Austrian design studio known for pushing boundaries in pattern innovation. After Lichen's phenomenal success, Martin posed a question that would fundamentally shift our design philosophy:
