Durkan Announces the Winners of their 2022 Student Design Competition, DSCVR

DALTON, Ga. May 6, 2022 — Durkan awarded Corina Amarioarei the Grand Prize in their 2022 DSCVR Student Design Competition May 6 live on their Instagram.

The Durkan DSCVR student design competition was established in partnership with the Network of the Hospitality Industry (NEWH) to exhibit the talent of designers in the hospitality design field and contribute toward the education of future designers. Students majoring in interior design, textiles and other commercial interior studies from around the country submitted fresh and innovative designs for either a private or public space of a hotel. The winner received $2,500 and a feature in the May/June issue of Hospitality Design magazine, second place took home $1,500, and third place winnings total $1,000. This year, Durkan received over 100 entries. The winners were chosen from a selection of top 10 finalists by a public vote totaling over 5000.

Corina Amarioarei’s “A Magical Dance” was inspired by Disney fairy tales and ocean waves. She created a design that illustrated the feeling of dancing on a cloud, along with the joy of twirling in the ocean. The Carleton University student was inspired to enter DSCVR because she is passionate about creating unique and exciting designs.

For second place winner Sarah Clark, she took a different perspective and analyzed mushrooms for her design entitled “Undergrowth”. Mushrooms seem small and simple, but offer a variety of patterns, shapes, textures, and colors. The Savannah College of Art and Design student decided to enter the Durkan competition because of her professor, Katie Buchanan. Her positive words of encouragement gave Clark the confidence to submit her work.

Emma Street took third place in this year’s DSCVR competition with her design “Fading Nostalgia”. Her concept was based on the space’s function as a ballroom. The Savannah College of Art and Design student was inspired by the idea of dancing and frivolity as well as the study of light imagery. She entered because DSCVR combined two of her favorite aspects of design and allowed her to assume the perspective of an interior designer who wants to create movement throughout a space.

The top three were chosen from the following list of finalists:

Amanda Rodier, Savannah College of Art and Design

Corina Amarioarei, Carleton University

Emily Caine, Utah State University
