How long have you been working in the Industry?
Thirty-six years, although my initial direction was interior design, working as a print separation artist for a local carpet mill pointed me toward the world of textile design. This led me to the once privately-owned Durkan in 1988 which laid a strong foundation as a hospitality print designer. I eventually pursued freelancing, which broadened my abilities to design for most carpet machines since Durkan only offered PDI at that time. My main clients were Durkan, Lexmark, Brumlow, Encore, Signature, Dalyn Rugs, Aqua, Innovative Carpets and Engineered Floors, and I have enjoyed offering 43 creative collections and 4 collaboration collections over the years.
What territory do you currently cover?
West and Mid-west United States
What inspires you professionally?
Honestly, watching others use their creative abilities to achieve great things as they’ve fed their passion. For some time, I felt somewhat excluded from the possibility of designing beyond custom work (something I put upon myself, by the way), but at some point, I was profoundly impacted by someone’s encouragement, which truly opened me to take bolder steps creatively. He said, “Karen, quit trying to design like the others and be yourself. You have a unique style. Don’t change it.” Not only did I feel truly valued, but I also realized that this world has an insatiable, never-ending appetite for new and different. There’s a place for all of us.
What is your favorite aspect of your job?
I absolutely love a creative challenge. An opportunity to meet those challenges is beyond exciting to me.
What are your most favorite things on your desk?
Handmade things. My Dad’s copper business card holder and pottery/art from both my sons created many moons ago.
When you are short on inspiration how do you reenergize; where do you go for inspiration?
Often I will look at trend sites but they don’t typically get me started. After convincing myself to trust my instincts, I’ll revert to nature and/or a stockpile of photos from past travels.
What made you decide to showcase the trend/designs that you selected?
It was an opportunity to provide fresh alternatives for gaming areas.
